The name 'Banh It' is taken after a kind of Vietnamese rice cake. The rice cake is made with a dark-colored herb, which makes the rice cake black.
The image of Banh It was also based on the illustration of 'Lac' bird, whose image usually appeared on Vietnamese traditional kettle drums. The clothing and decorations was inspired by clothes from the ancient Lac Viet era in Vietnam.
'Banh Beo' is also one of Vietnamese rice cakes. But on the contrary of 'Banh It', 'Banh Beo' is made purely from rice flour, without additional ingredients. That makes the rice cake white in color.
The mask was created with the inspiration from the longevity symbol, originated from the ancient Vietnamese feudal dynasty.

This is a character design assignment that I did for Concept Art Course at university.
I always like to draw monsters. Because, unlike human or real object, monsters are created solely based on the illustrator's style and imagination. To me, drawing monsters was an amazing experience, it made me feel like I was creating my own creatures and put them into life.
